An original painting has a compelling presence

Art is a unique and personal way to bring your sense of style to your home.

I believe there is an innate quality that is recognisable, yet indefinable, which a beautiful artwork emanates. It draws the viewer in and envelopes them in that state of flow that the artist experienced during its creation. I share that experience with you through my paintings.

About the artist

I fell in love with art and creativity when I realised the powerful impact a beautiful painting can have. It can uplift the mood and bring the interior design of a home to life. As a process, painting brings me deep engagement in the present moment. Time flies and my sense of self is forgotten. Painting is a meditation. It is also frustrating, complicated, nuanced and richly satisfying for its own sake.

I have a bachelor of design (hons, 1st) and have been exhibiting and selling my work since 2007. My work has been shown in various galleries and exhibitions around New Zealand. You can view currently available work on the shop page.

I work from my home studio in Wellington, NZ.

About the art

My art is informed by the natural New Zealand landscape. Time in nature plays an important role in our wellbeing and these paintings aim to capture that mindful, expansive feeling of beholding a beautiful landscape. In these artworks the weather, the light, the vegetation, even the landforms are in flux. Land emerges and fades again through a collection of abstract marks, subtle texture and enigmatic light sources. My intention is to evoke a sense of the vitality of the land and celebrate nature as a creative and rejuvenating force.

I begin any painting with loose and fast gestural marks. Sometimes I have a general idea or intention, other times ideas crystallise further into the process. I work in layers to build up a history of marks on the canvas. Much as our physical landscape is influenced by previous occurrences (storms, or human presence for example) the painting’s layers provide evidence of past activity. The work gradually develops into a richly layered, abstract interpretation of the land. I share more about my studio practice over on my blog.

What Others Are Saying

“The paintings are utterly gorgeous, love the layers of colour and texture. Just beautiful, thanks so much!”

— ELIZABETH WAUGH.

"I absolutely love the colours in our painting- bright blues, pinks and greens. It brings our living space to life! Every time I see it, it makes me smile. My girls also love it as it sparks their imagination: making shapes and seeing different things among the brush strokes."

— SARAH Y.

“I am very pleased with my Veronica Young painting. I originally chose it because I had wall space to fill in my bedroom and I loved the colours. I then realised that it is a painting of a hill that I can see from my bedroom window. So, it is now positioned next to the window with the view and reminds me that one day I must walk up that hill.”

— JULIA O’DELL

"I love the textures and colours Veronica uses in her paintings; they always make me feel happy when I look at them. Whenever we have friends over, they always comment on how beautiful her artwork is"

— TRACY K
